With monthly compounding, each month your balance grows by one twelfth of your annual rate, then your monthly contribution is added on top. With annual compounding, the full rate applies once a year and your monthly contributions are added at year-end.
Example: $1,000 to start, $100 a month, 7% a year, compounded monthly, for 10 years → about $19,318. You put in $13,000; interest did the other $6,318.
